Unverified

The Keurig was crypto-mining, seeding torrents, or had been hacked

Assessment

As the post went viral, commenters on X attributed the traffic to crypto mining, seeding torrents, serving adult content, or a compromise, and some feared the device was spying. Cybernews documented these reactions explicitly as jokes and speculation. No evidence supports any of them: the poster took no packet capture, found no indication of botnet or external activity, and the behaviour stopped after a reboot and VLAN isolation rather than persisting as a mining or C2 implant would. A low-power appliance controller is also a poor fit for sustained mining. This is recorded as unverified — not disproven, but with nothing published to support it — because the speculation keeps recirculating as if it were a finding.

What “Unverified” means

Widely repeated, but no supporting evidence was located. This is not a statement that the claim is false — it is a statement that nothing published supports it, which is a different and more common problem.
