Weak Evidence

Empire Market's admins exit-scammed users in August 2020

Assessment

The 'exit scam' label has attached to Empire Market's August 2020 collapse since that month — BleepingComputer's August 26, 2020 report quoted a vendor calling it an exit scam — and later blockchain-analytics write-ups repeated it as settled fact. But the same contemporaneous reporting attributed the shutdown to an extortion-driven DDoS campaign, said user funds were stranded in escrow, and stated the operators' intent was never confirmed. The federal prosecution record is decisive on what was actually proven: the superseding indictment and Hamilton's plea charge operation only 'until on or about August 22, 2020' and nowhere allege, charge, or characterise an exit scam. Readers repeating 'the admins exit-scammed users' are stating a plausible but unproven motive as fact.
