Archetyp was traced through a misconfigured backup exposing an unencrypted database
Assessment
The explanation is specific: a single misconfigured backup process exposed an unencrypted database snapshot that let investigators map the platform, including vendor PGP keys, transaction records and administrator access patterns. It appears in near-identical terms across several security publications, stated as established fact. It is attributed to no one. The Bundeskriminalamt's indictment announcement of 3 August 2026 is detailed — the charged period, the tonnage, the commission rate, the court, the statute, the confession — and discloses no investigative method at all. Europol's material on Operation Deep Sentinel is similarly silent. Neither the Frankfurt General Prosecutor nor the Dutch National Police has published how the server was located or how the administrator was identified. This silence is deliberate and routine: disclosed technique stops working. So the explanation in circulation did not come from anyone in a position to know it, and no source is offered for it. It may well be right. Infrastructure misconfiguration is a documented route to locating Tor hidden services, and it is exactly the kind of failure that would explain a takedown of a Monero-only market where chain analysis does not apply. That is precisely what makes it dangerous: it is plausible enough that nobody checks. Rated Unverified rather than False because nothing contradicts it. The problem is that a hypothesis has entered the record as a finding, in a case where the investigating authority made a considered decision to say nothing — and there is no mechanism by which that gets corrected.

Widely repeated, but no supporting evidence was located. This is not a statement that the claim is false — it is a statement that nothing published supports it, which is a different and more common problem.
